Forest Interior tutorial by dpaint

Here is a way to organize the complex information of an interior forest. This will work no matter what your rendering style happens to be. Whether you are an impressionist painter like me or a realist, the basic building blocks for the picture are the same the only difference is how far you want to carry the finish. This photoshop demo is based on a traditional painting I did a while back.

The challenge is to arrange the information to give you the illusion of space where no horizon is apparent. Forest scenes work best when you use clearings to establish a foreground or middle ground to help divide space in the scene. It doesn’t matter if you are painting jungle or alpine forests the abstract qualities of design still apply.

It helps to visualize the anchor points of the composition first. These objects will have the most detail and can be flagged or spotlighted for greater effect. They will give your eye a place to go in the image allowing you to use areas of less detail as counterpoints.

I always start with large areas of color keyed to the average for that mass this helps to unify the shape. I set up the different layers and work between them to balance color value and shape. Once these are established to my liking I begin to develop and refine the painting adding interest as I go.

To say my home situation is less than desirable would be an understatement; I’ll post more details below, but basically I am living with an emotionally abusive, pushy and uncaring boyfriend and I need to raise money to get a train ticket back home.

FEES:
10/15$  = bust/full bodied sketch (+5 for additional characters)

20$ = bust/full bodied in color (+5 for additional characters)

40$ = full colored picture with background, one/two characters (+5 for additional characters)

My situation:

A few months ago I found myself getting kicked out of my apartment, so my boyfriend took me in. He was a real sweetheart to start, he understood my need for privacy, was generally understanding and kind, always supportive. But in the last couple of months something has changed and it’s been getting steadily worst.

He is very aware of my anxiety disorder, and where he used to be caring he is now abrasive, calling it ‘fake’ and an excuse for me to be ‘lazy.’ He rolls his eyes when I get a panic attack and never takes the depression that comes with my anxiety disorder seriously. I also don’t like to be touched, not often. He invades my personal space on a daily basis now, holding on to me so tight that I can’t move, and if I tell him how uncomfortable I am he just laughs and brushes it off, stating he doesn’t care because he wants to touch me, and that’s all the matters. He’s been pushing me to have sex with him lately as well, but I’ve been refusing because I am uncomfortable getting close to him.

He’s been getting far more controlling as well. Always demanding to know what I’m doing, who I’m talking to; on the off chance I do leave my room/go out, on my return I am faced with many firm questions. I’ve become very meek and passive when it comes to him and in my personal life, and those who know me well know that I’m usually very exuberant and outgoing. But I’m afraid and nervous all the time. I can barely sleep, eat and every day brings new stress (I’m never sure if he’s just going to burst into my room, grab me or force kisses on me when I don’t want them.)

This is my train fare:

I am hoping to raise around 400/500 dollars and see if my dad can pay the rest (I can’t put the full ticket on him, he doesn’t have the money) and if worse comes to worst I’ll take off the sleeper package (basically it’s a three day trip; from edmonton to toronto I chose the package that includes meals, etc,) and get both economy tickets.

Any help would be appreciated, and I will try to give you your drawings in a timely manner. Please signal boost if you can. I would get a job but I live in a very small town and I’ve done the job hunting rounds twice a week for a month now, without any bites This is the last thing I could think to do.

If anyone would care to donate a coloured comic page for the comic industry standard list I’m willing to accept one and will give credit c8 I would’ve made one if I had an example but I don’t -A-

But yes that’s off my chest.

Of course this is based off my own browsing over price lists and how I work unfortunately my commissioner homie went idle so I can’t confirm the most vs the least one can spend.

I’ve only found one artist thus far that charges nearly as close to industry standard. Even then it’s under the standard. As far a I’m concerned anyone under the standard shouldn’t have complaints about expensive art. Fandom average is hardly one you can live by.

Would you like to get paid $30 for 3-7 days worth of work?

ahahah ok, this actually made me remember one moment that happened on a local Con this summer, we were doing commissions there, and we were drawing A5 format chibies for 5LT(2$) they were lined, colored and looking all nice and this girl comes to us asking about prices and we tell her that chibi drawing is 2$ and she said: wow that`s too expensive and walked away.

seriously though. I sell my stuff for so cheap when I could get away with much more. Mostly because my friends are either highschoolers or college students and I can understand not having access to or having the money in general, but I’ve sold a print of an unfinished piece for $175 before to an artist/art collector friend, so I know my stuff is worth or close to being worth industry standard prices.

Its hard to see people whine at me that $10 is too expensive for a fully shaded single body when i should be selling them for more 8( But I know a lot of other people enjoy the prices because they can actually buy stuff at that price, so it’s worth it for them more than anything.

Pay attention.
